To ensure governmental accountability, the public need to hold their local government to account, and so require access to accurate service delivery information. Access to this type of information is not only useful, but by law it is required to be made available on municipalities’ websites. Ndifuna Ukwazi developed the Municipal Compliance Tracker which rates municipalities in terms of compliance with legislation that specify requirements for their websites, phone numbers, and PAIA contact details, as well as other concerns. The tracker scores municipalities according to criteria including: a working website; PAIA/Access to Information Manual; Information Officer details; and Service delivery agreements (SDAs). Failure to comply with these regulations is a violation of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), and the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA).
